SEDIMENT SAMPLING DEVICE

Sediment measurement involves sampling the water-sediment mixture to determine the average sediment/silt concentration, particle size distribution, specific gravity, temperature of the water-sediment mixture, and other physical and chemical properties of the transported solids.

The concentration of suspended sediment in a natural stream varies from the water surface to the bottom and differs laterally along the flow. The concentration generally increases from a minimum value at the water surface to a maximum value at or near the streambed.

The samplers provided here were designed by the U.S. Federal Interagency Sedimentation Project.
